First through Fourth

At Beyond the Books, our students are taught by experienced, certified educators who are highly trained in our curriculum. Students will begin the day in their assigned grade level homerooms, which is where they will remain for morning meeting, writing, lunch, and social studies and science. In the beginning of the year, students will be assessed in language arts and math. For these subjects, students may be relocated to a class whose level is just right for them.  Our standard based curriculum is rigorous and will bridge the learning gaps your child may have coming from public schools, which have a one sized fits all curriculum.

Our class sizes do not exceed 14 children; therefore core subject areas are taught in small group so that students can receive a lot of one on one attention and can move at their own pace.  Wilson Fundations is used for language arts and is an entirely hands on, kinesthetic phonics program, as well as a handwriting program. It encourages students to physically build words, take words apart, identify parts of words and truly understand how words are put together. Fundations has its own set of "trick words" which we have modified to include other sight words and has daily writing components. Students will use the standard based MyMath curriculum which is completely interactive as they will use math manipulative on a daily basis. This program is accompanied by corresponding hands on math games children will play with their peers for extra reinforcement of various skills. The Writing program is teacher created and will be used within the homeroom grade levels and will allow students to become successful in all aspects of the writing process and celebrate their growth along the way. Social Studies and Science will be taught with the grade level class using interactive and hands on projects. Recess will be included in our schedule everyday with all students. We will have 50 minutes on nice days to be outside on the field, or on colder days, we will use the indoor turf with sports equipment or play in our classrooms which are set up with legos, arts and crafts, and tons of imaginative play materials.  In addition, our FUN Fridays will allow for parent volunteers, and our special which rotates monthly and includes art, music, theater, life skills, and yoga to name a few!
